monetarism [ (mon-uh-tuh-riz-uhm) ] The economic doctrine that the supply of money has a major impact on a nation's economic growth. For example, monetarists prefer to control inflation by restricting the growth of a nation's money supply rather than by raising taxes. Monetarism (a term coined in the late 1960s) offered an anti-Keynesian alternative analysis (Mayer, 1978). Unlike Keynesians, monetarists, led by Milton Friedman, presumed that the private sector left to its own devices was fundamentally stable and that ill-conceived government policy was the main source of business cycles.
